About Dr. Margaret Brown

Dr. Margaret Lynn Brown teaches American history courses at Brevard College, including Wilderness in American Life, History of Southeastern Native Americans, and The New South. She is the Author of The Wild East: A Biography of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (University of Florida Press, 2000, reissue forthcoming); co-author of Hiking Guide to the Smokies; and a regular reviewer for the Journal of Southern History and Environmental History. A founder of the Institute for Women in Leadership, Brown is also the Program Coordinator for the History Program. She serves on the Advisory Board of Veterans Museum of the Carolinas, and she frequently advises students who want to work as an intern at regional historic sites.
Brown raises monarch caterpillars in her native plant garden. She also can be found hiking the trails of Pisgah, Dupont Forest, Jocassee, and the Great Smoky Mountains.
