Information about Distance & Online Learning
Brevard College offers distance education in accordance with the regulations of the United States Department of Education and the regulations of each state or territory. The National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA) aids in remedying inconsistencies among state regulations and aids in satisfying consistent customer protection by centralizing the authorization process. NC-SARA is a voluntary agreement among member states and U.S. territories that establishes comparable national standards for interstate offering of postsecondary distance education courses and programs. The intent is to make it easier for students to take online courses that are being offered by postsecondary institutions in other states. Brevard College is a member of the State Authorization Reciprocal Agreement initiative (SARA). Verification of approval by SARA to offer online courses can be found by visiting the NC-SARA website. Information about State Authorization Liaisons Per State can be found here.
Ensuring Students Identities
Brevard College has established processes to ensure that the student who registers in a distance or correspondence education course or program is the same student who participates in and completes the course or program and receives the credit. This is achieved through assigning students with unique and secure login and password, required multifactor authentication, and additional pedagogical practices and which are further detailed in college policies.
Privacy of Distance Learning Students
Brevard College has a written procedure for protecting the privacy of students enrolled in distance and correspondence education courses or programs. This policy is from the College Catalog and is linked here.
Notification of Projected Additional Student Charges Associated with Verification of Student Identity
Before students are registered into any classes each semester, the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs for Online Learning contacts the student to inform them of the courses in which they will be registered and any costs they will incur. There are no additional charges associated with verification of identity.
