Sergei Prokofiev’s score for the ballet Romeo and Juliet was originally rejected as “impossible to dance to,” but audiences were so enamored with the orchestral suites that ballet companies ultimately vied for the right of first production. In present day, Sergei’s grandson Gabriel Prokofiev is a well-established composer with a large body of orchestral and chamber works to his credit—hear one of his three unique concertos for the turntable.
