Women’s Lacrosse: Brevard Dominates Sweet Briar to Open 2022 with Big Win

The Brevard College women’s lacrosse team (1-0) opened its 2022 campaign with a dominant 21-3 triumph over Sweet Briar College (0-1) on Saturday morning at Ives-Lemel Family Field.

Brevard’s 21 goals were the program’s most since BC put 26 past Salem College on February 28, 2018.

Four Tornados enjoyed multi-goal performances, with senior captain KC Collins leading the way. The senior midfielder from Marietta, Georgia led all scorers with a career-high six goals while also dishing out a career-best four assists. In her collegiate debut, freshman midfielder Emily Denaga logged a five-goal performance with an assist, helping pace the Tornado offense. Junior attacker Parker Moore added five goals, while also distributing four assists in the winning effort. Savannah Colliver added three goals and an assist, while Grace Blanton and Dani Stavely each logged their first goals as Tornado student-athletes.

Lexi Maclauchlin (1-0) earned her first-career start in front of goal for the Tornados, making seven saves en route to the victory. As a team, BC’s defense totaled 21 ground balls, forced 22 turnovers, and caused five turnovers. Brevard’s offense outshot Sweet Briar, 36-13, and went 8-for-13 on clear attempts.

Sweet Briar’s Zerah Chase got on the score sheet three times, scoring all three Vixen goals, while Sarah Schindler added two assists.

Brevard started strong, scoring its first seven goals all in the first quarter of action. Blanton scored the first goal before Collins connected with Parker for Brevard’s second score. Colliver, Denaga (two goals), Collins, and Moore all scored to give Brevard the 7-0 advantage – with all goals coming in the first 11 minutes of play. Sweet Briar got one goal back, as the Tornados held a 7-1 lead at the end of the period.

Denaga and Collins scored a pair of goals before the visitors got one back, making the score 9-2. BC put five unanswered in the back of the net to close out the second period, as Brevard took a 14-2 lead into the halftime break.

The Tornados were able to cruise from there, outscoring Sweet Briar 7-1 in the second half to comfortably take the 21-3 triumph.

Brevard will return to action, hosting Alma College on Wednesday, February 23 at Ives-Lemel Family Field, with first draw set for 5 p.m.
