The Brevard College women’s tennis team (3-8) defeated Cairn University (6-1) 7-2 at the PTR Spring Fest on morning at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. It marked the second victory in the four matches played thus far in the Spring 2021 season for the BC women’s team, while handing Cairn its first defeat of 2021-22.
Brevard opened the match with a 3-0 advantage, after sweeping doubles play. Junior Hamrick Perry and freshman Sophie Trantham teamed up at the number one doubles spot to earn an 8-5 victory. Freshman Hannah Hersh and junior Brooke Garland took care of their opponents 8-3 in no. 2 doubles. Junior Alli Kogoy and sophomore Melody Ferguson cruised to an 8-2 victory in no. 3 doubles.
Ahead 3-0, BC then won four of the six singles matches with every victory coming in straight sets. Hersh won 6-4, 6-1 in number one singles to defeat Cairn’s top singles player. Perry (6-0, 6-1) and Kogoy (6-1, 6-0) each lost just one game in their two decisive wins in no. 2 and no. 3 singles respectively.
Trantham won 6-3, 6-2 in number five singles to complete the commanding 7-2 team victory.
After a day off in Hilton Head, the Tornados will return to action on Tuesday with a match vs. Morningside University (Iowa) at 8:30 a.m. at Hilton Head High School. BC will then conclude its five-match odyssey in Hilton Head vs. Albion College on Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort.
