In their first official game of the season, Brevard men’s lacrosse followed their exhibition win over Mars Hill with a dominating 15-6 win over Montreat on Wednesday night at Ives-Lemel Field.
Head Coach Eric McKinney was able to notch his first win at the helm of the Brevard men’s lacrosse program, as the Tornados scored the most goals in a game since Feb. 11th, 2017 when the team scored 22 against Emmanuel. The defense also allowed single-digit goals for the first time since Mar. 11th, 2017 when Brevard limited Coker to just five goals.
Jackson McKaig led all scorers with five goals, followed by Kyle Hunziker (four), Sam Duffie (three), and Paxton Brown, Jack Shadeand David Buono each added one goal on the night. On the defensive end, Brevard goalkeeper Xza Holmes-Copeland recorded eight saves on 14 shot attempts in 46 minutes of action.
For the Cavaliers, Chris Jackson led the way with three goals, followed by Cody Bischoff, Kyndell Overton and Alex Wheet each recording one goal.
A tightly-contested game in the early going, Jackson brought it to a three-all deadlock at the 1:39 mark in the first quarter. Brevard then went on a tear, scoring seven of the next nine goals to end the first half with a 10-5 advantage. The Tornados then put the game on ice in the second half, as the team went on a 5-1 run to close out the game.
Brevard’s most productive offensive period came in the second quarter when the team scored six goals, highlighted by Duffie tallying three goals. The Tornado’s best defensive quarter came in the final 15 minutes of action, when Brevard limited Montreat to just two shots and shut out the Cavs in the fourth quarter.
As a team, Brevard recorded twice as many shots as Montreat (36-18), while also forcing 20 turnovers.
Brevard’s next game will be on the road at Birmingham Southern this Saturday (Feb. 10th), with the game set to start at 4:00 p.m. EST.
