  • LearnChicago Mini Grant from Appalachian College Association.  Awarded a grant for proposal entitled “Cultural Competence for Teachers.” to plan and lead a trip for preservice teachers to Chicago Center for Urban Life and Culture for diversity training, with emphasis on meeting the needs of Latino students and their families.  Fall 2012. 
  • Nominated, Selected and Inducted into ODK (Omicron Delta Kappa).   National Leadership Honor Society for college student, staff, administrators, and alumni.  Spring 2010.
  • Western Carolina Research Symposium. Best Educational Research Award, March 2008. 
  • United Methodist Church Award for Exemplary Teaching.  2007.

Betsy helps create a weekly Education column called “Everyday Education” in the Transylvania Times, and contributes as one of seven rotating educators/writers/columnists.  She began the column with the Editor to keep the public informed about educational issues in the context of our own local community.  Titles of her columns include the following:
