Dr. Charles Wallis is a name that students know on the Brevard College campus!

Brevard students have commented that Dr. Wallis always enters class enthusiastic and excited about teaching math.

Dr. Wallis, a math professor, grew up in Morganton, N.C. He always wanted to live in the mountains, and now he is living that dream!

“Some teachers make math boring and uninteresting. That’s not Dr. Wallis. He’s excited about teaching math and math concepts. That enthusiasm is contagious. I love his class,” said a former student of Dr. Wallis.

Dr. Wallis has been teaching at Brevard College for 17 years. His path to become a professor at Brevard was not a direct path. He was a dishwasher, camp counselor, and computer programmer before becoming a professor at Gainesville College, Western Carolina University, and Brevard College.

“All of these jobs gave me an appreciation for what a college education can give you,” Dr. Wallis said.  When asked why he chose to teach at Brevard College, he said “the location, small class sizes, the quick access to the outdoors, and the focus is on teaching.”

Dr. Wallis loves to hike, read, and spend time with his Mom. He is also an author of several published mathematics papers.

Dr. Wallis earned a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at North Carolina State University, a Master’s degree in Mathematical Sciences at Clemson University and his Ph.D. in Mathematical Sciences at Clemson University.
