Brevard College’s Food for Thought series recently welcomed Senior Director of Public Relations Phil de Montmollin for a conversation that took attendees beyond the scoreboard and into the inner workings of major sporting events. Sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs, Food for Thought is a campus forum designed to spark conversation across disciplines by inviting faculty and staff to share topics that matter to them. The event is open to the entire campus community.

Drawing on his extensive career in sports broadcasting, Phil offered an inside look at the complex logistics behind large-scale events, including NFL games. He discussed the many behind-the-scenes roles that make live sports possible—positions that often go unnoticed by fans watching from the stands or at home.

As a longtime talent statistician for ESPN, FOX Sports, and the NBA’s Miami Heat, and as an instructor of sports media and broadcasting at Brevard College, Phil brings professional insight directly into the classroom. His experience provides valuable context for students interested in communication, media, and sports industries, while also offering a broader perspective for anyone curious about how major broadcasts come together in real time.

The session highlighted the intersection of professional practice and academic exploration, reinforcing Food for Thought’s mission to create space for meaningful dialogue and shared learning across campus.
