Senior midfielder Amberlyn Hernandez scored her first collegiate goal in the 40th minute, as the Brevard College women’s soccer team (1-0-1) drew against Oglethorpe (0-0-1), 1-1 on Wednesday evening at the Oglethorpe Track and Field.
Hernandez, a native of Marshall, North Carolina, put a pass from Sienna Fox past Oglethorpe’s keeper to record her first goal as a Tornado. The strike proved pivotal for Brevard, as BC erased an early fifth-minute strike by the Stormy Petrels.
Brevard’s defense kept Oglethorpe from finding a second goal for 85-plus minutes, with Abby Nunez saving three on-target attempts from the Stormy Petrels.
The goalkeeping duo of Katherine Crim and Masha Renggli combined for 10 saves, with Renggli stopping seven Tornado attempts in the second half to prevent the Tornados from finding a match winner.
Carissa Jenkins led all Tornados with three shot attempts, while Catie Barton, Peyton Coggins, Fox, and Janie Steele all fired multiple attempts off.
Brevard doubled Oglethorpe on shot attempts, 16-8, with a 10-5 advantage in the second half.
The draw extends BC’s unbeaten stretch in regular season matches to 38 matches, dating back to Oct. 14, 2023.
BC now prepares for its home debut on Saturday at 7 p.m. vs. Guilford.
