At 2:00 pm on Wednesday, February 19, internationally acclaimed pianist Kwan Yi will return to the Porter Center for a performance of Liszt’s second suite (“Italie,” op. 161) from Années de pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage). The concert is free and open to the public.

The second of four major suites in the larger work, the Italian suite draws inspiration from the sonnets of Petrarch, artworks by Raphael and Michelangelo, city life in Venice and Florence, and multiple musical sources (including Rossini and gondolier songs). It was written between the years of 1838 and 1849 and published in 1858, after several reworkings.

Kwan Yi has performed around the globe in such venues as Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Auditorium du Louvre, and the Seoul Arts Center. He has appeared as a soloist with the Russian National Orchestra, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, and the Brevard Festival Orchestra, and has collaborated with artists such as Roberto Diaz and Itzhak Perlman. He is a member of the music faculty at East Carolina University and does frequent recital-masterclass residencies at universities around the country. Thanks to his happy memories of summers at the  Brevard Music Center and his appreciation of the acoustic in the Scott Concert Hall, Brevard audiences are fortunate to enjoy occasional free concerts from this tremendous artist.
