Women’s Lacrosse Overtime Goal Lifts Tornados Past Battling Bishops 11-10

Junior attacker Parker Moore scored a game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Brevard College women’s lacrosse team (4-9, 2-5 USA South) picked up a key USA South Conference victory over NC Wesleyan College (4-10, 3-4 USAS) on Saturday in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

Moore, a junior from Raleigh, North Carolina, led the Tornados on the afternoon with a five-goal performance and an assist for six total points, while also winning a team-high five draw controls. In her first game of the 2022 season, junior attacker Autumn Kraemer scored three times and dished out a pair of assists for five points, while Savannah Colliver added a goal and an assist. KC Collins and Emily Denaga also got on the score sheet for Brevard.

Freshman goalkeeper Lexi Maclaichlin (4-6) earned her fourth win of the season in goal, making 10 saves in 63:41 of action with four ground balls.

NC Wesleyan had three players with multiple-goal performances. The Battling Bishops hauled in 29 ground balls, won 16 draw controls, and went 4-for-5 on clear attempts while outshooting Brevard 29-22. The Tornados scored a pair of free-position shots in the contest.

The hosts opened the scoring up before Kraemer scored her first goal of the season at the 4:38 mark to tie things up at one goal apiece. Moore scored a Colliver assist to give the Tornados their first lead of the contest, 2-1, at the 2:24 mark. NCWC answered back to tie things back up as the contest shifted to the second period.

Moore tallied her second goal of the afternoon with 8:49 left in the second quarter as Brevard briefly retook the lead, but the Battling Bishops strung together consecutive goals, one of the power-play variety, to take a one-goal lead 4-3 at the halftime intermission.

NCWC’s Aydriyan Upchurch scored for the second time of the game to open the second half up, but the Tornados answered back with consecutive goals for the game’s fourth tie, 5-5, with 7:28 remaining in the third quarter. The Battling Bishops answered with two goals of their own, taking a 7-5 margin into the last period of regulation.

Brevard promptly tied the game with a pair of man-up goals from Colliver and Denaga, before the two sides traded a pair of scores to bring the game to a deadlock 8-8 with 10:10 left to play.

NC Wesleyan scored a pair of man-up goals around the seven-minute mark to retake a 10-8 advantage. Brevard’s Moore then answered the bell, scoring a free-position goal with 4:59 left to play before finishing a Kraemer assist at the 2:38 mark to tie things up at 10-all. The score remained tied, sending the contest into overtime for Brevard’s first OT of the season.

After a few changes of possession, BC maintained the ball with 2:49 left in the overtime period and called timeout, drawing up a game-winning play as Moore found the back of the net for the game-winner to give the Tornados an 11-10 triumph over the Battling Bishops in a back-and-forth conference affair.

The Tornados gear up for its second game in two days as Brevard heads to Greensboro, North Carolina to take on Greensboro College on Sunday at 1 p.m.
