The Brevard College Wilderness Leadership & Experiential Education (WLEE) program will be offering two certification courses in early 2024: a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) recertification on January 19-21, and a full WFR course for first-time or lapsed certifications on March 11-17. Both courses are open to the public to register and organized by Colorado Outside.

The Wilderness First Responder program is the ideal medical training for leaders in remote areas, including outdoor educators, guides, military, professional search and rescue teams, researchers, and those involved in disaster relief. The curriculum is comprehensive and practical. It includes the essential principles and skills required to assess and manage medical problems in isolated and extreme environments for days and weeks if necessary.

The recertification course is open to graduates of any wilderness-based first aid training course that was at least 64 hours long and completed within 3 years of the proposed recertification option. Successful graduates of this course will receive Wilderness Medical Associates’ Wilderness First Responder, Anaphylaxis, and BLS/Healthcare Provider-level CPR certifications.

“WFR is a core component for all students who are part of the WLEE program,” said Dr. Jennifer Kafsky, Coordinator & Professor of WLEE. “It requires them to think ahead, prepare, practice and think critically in potentially high-stress situations. These are the types of leaders we all want guiding us in the wilderness.”

“With all of the outdoor adventure professionals and job opportunities in our area, this is a very useful certification to have,” said Clayton Sheehan, Logistics Manager for WLEE. “But WFR training is also helpful for any outdoor enthusiast. It helps build confidence in problem solving and addressing medical issues in the field, protecting family and friends while adventuring together. We welcome anyone in the community who is eligible to register.”
