What do knights, pirates, British comedy, and 80’s punk have in common? Find out on Monday, November 21, when Brevard College voice students present their fall opera scenes program in Ingram Auditorium at 7:30 pm.
Stage director Brittnee Siemon has selected scenes from several Gilbert & Sullivan operettas including Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore, Ruddigore, Trial by Jury, to update by a century (from the 1870s-80s to the 1970s-80s) with fresh lyrics and a modern look. Theatre faculty designer Ida Bostian has helped transform the scenes into an 80’s punk revue.
As part of the ongoing tradition of tailoring G&S to local venues, music director Vance Reese and cast member Bunny Frost (whom many know as the manager of Bill’s Boiler House) have transformed a famous aria from The Mikado to showcase the “Barista of Brevard,” whom everyone hails, singing about the punishments that his coffee shop patrons must suffer for their crimes. All of this is done as in the original operetta (and as in Monty Python’s sketches) to poke fun at our human institutions and preconceived notions. Prepare to experience an amalgamation of cultures combined with excellent singing and acting from our music students. The program is free and open to the public.
