Brevard student athletes collect nearly 1000 canned goods for local foodbankBREVARD, N.C. – With help from the surrounding community for its Trick-or-Treat for cans event on Sunday, Oct. 29, the Brevard College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee collected 943 non-perishable goods that were donated to the Brevard Bread of Life pantry.

The Tornado softball team collected the most cans of any of the 21 teams participating, hauling in 183.

“I am so proud of the efforts by our student-athlete body this past weekend,” said Jamie Atkinson, who serves as SAAC President and Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance and Academic Services. “This event was organized entirely by them and they spent their Sunday afternoon out in our community giving back, despite being some of the busiest students on campus. The items that we collected this weekend is just a small insight into all of the good things that our students do for others on this campus.”

All donations will also assist in the USA South’s “Cans Across the Conference” initiative, which was established in 2004, with the yearly winner recognized at the close of the athletic season.

Last fall USA South institutions collected 50,172 items marking the third-highest total in competition history. Over the last 13 years of the program, USA South Conference institutions have donated 389,266 items to various organizations.
