The Music Department at Brevard College is excited to present Brevard local and senior Katie Smathers in recital on Friday, Nov. 4 at 4:00 p.m. in The Porter Center for Performing Arts’ Scott Concert Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.
Her program will include arias by Mozart and Handel, along with art songs by Duparc, Bizet, Copland, Schubert, Lee Hoiby, and Jake Heggie. Audiences have enjoyed Smathers’ solos with the choirs for several years, and last spring, she placed first in the North Carolina chapter auditions held by the National Association of Teachers of Singing. She has performed in the Music Department’s Honors Recital four times, and she has received the department’s Outstanding Vocal Performer award twice.
“We are very proud of Katie’s growth,” says her teacher, Dr. Kathryn Gresham. “She is a Brevard High School alumna, a first-generation college graduate, and a terrific spokesperson for Brevard College.”
After she graduates this December, Smathers plans to move to Florida and pursue a master’s degree in voice.
