Senior kicker Alex Noboa has been named to the preseason watch list for the Fred Mitchell Award, given annually to one small-college placekicker who excels both on the field and in the community.
Noboa is one of 41 student-athletes named to this year’s watch list that come from all three NCAA divisions and the NAIA and junior college ranks. He was named to the 2014 all-South Atlantic Conference second team after making seven of his eight field goal attempts and 41 of 42 PAT’s last season.
“It’s an honor to be acknowledged for my hard work,” Noboa said, “and I wouldn’t be here without the support of my family and my coaching staff and my fellow players alongside me. Last year I was a little frustrated with my one miss. I’d like to not miss at all this year.”
Noboa set a school NCAA-era record for points by a kicker when he made all nine PAT attempts and a 23-yard field goal during a 66-0 win over College of Faith in the season finale, an afternoon that earned him SAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors. He also set single-season NCAA-era records for PAT’s made, PAT’s attempted, PAT percentage, and field goal percentage.
In order to be named to the watch list, student-athletes must demonstrate a commitment to their community through service projects. In his first season at Brevard after transferring from Chowan, Noboa began volunteering at an assisted living facility and in the college’s student life center. He also completed service projects while studying abroad in Costa Rica and is a new inductee into the Omricon Delta Kappa leadership honor society.
Noboa is the only South Atlantic Conference player named to the watch list and joins Davidson’s Trevor Smith and Guilford’s Tyler Hunt as watch list members from North Carolina institutions.
