BC BB Hang

BREVARD, N.C. – The Brevard College men’s basketball team (6-13, 3-5 USAS) fell to No. 11 Maryville College (18-1; 8-0 USAS) by a final of 96-81 in a hard-fought contest on Tuesday evening at the Boshamer Gymnasium.

LB Boyette led all Tornados with 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field and three made 3-pointers. Alex Wesig came off the bench to score 14 points and grab a team-high five boards, while he and Luke Bleynat each blocked a pair of shot attempts. Charles Reed added 11 points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting night.

Maryville was paced by six double-digit scorers, led by Chase Ridenour’s 15 points that included a 10-of-10 mark at the free throw line.

BC and Maryville each shot the ball at a 46% clip from the field, while the Scots were able to dominate the boards, 44-26. Both teams saw their share of time at the charity stripe, with Maryville attempting 43 free throws to Brevard’s 28. The Tornados dished out 17 assists, scored 18 points off Maryville turnovers, and totaled 40 bench points on the evening.

A Bleynat layup gave Brevard the first lead of the game before a 7-0 Maryville run made the score 7-2. BC battled back, tying the game and then taking its second lead of the contest after a David Sealy 3-pointer at the 15:17 mark. Maryville answered back by scoring eight of the next 10 points to retake the lead, 17-12.

A Wesig 3-pointer with 8:14 left in the first half cut the lead back down to five points, 24-19. Maryville extended its lead to a 29-21 margin before five consecutive points from BC capped with a Hayden Cassell and one layup made the score 29-26.

The Tornados cut the deficit to within three points on two more occasions in the first half, as the Scots held a 36-33 advantage with 2:45 left in the period, but Maryville was able to end the half on a 10-2 run to take an 11-point lead into the break.

Maryville scored the first six points of the second half to take a game-high 17 point lead, but the Tornados hung around, putting together an 11-0 run of their own to make the score 52-46 at the 16:14 mark. The Tornados kept the contest in striking distance, but the Scots held off any late rally from the Tornados as Maryville utilized the free throw line to keep Brevard out of reach for the remainder of the contest. Maryville was able to wrap up its 15-point conference win, 96-81.

The Tornados prepare for a crucial weekend of action at home as Brevard hosts a pair of USA South contests. Brevard first plays Huntingdon on Friday at 2 p.m. before hosting Covenant on Saturday at 4 p.m.
