WINSTON-SALEM N.C. – The Brevard College climbing team posted impressive results, including an event win by junior Dawson Jacobs and a grand total of six total top-ten finishes, at the Wake Forest University Comp, a USA Climbing Southeast qualifying event in the discipline of bouldering held Saturday on the Wake Forest campus in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Jacobs won the competition, besting a strong field of 32 men’s climbers and leading the Tornados to a total of four men’s top-ten finishes. Junior Caleb Trent finished third, followed by a sixth-place result for junior Chris Board and a seventh-place finish for junior Kendrick Austin. The win by Jacobs marked the second consecutive event victory for a Brevard College climber at a USA South Climbing Qualifier this season as Austin won the USA Climbing collegiate qualifying competition in December at Big Foot Climbing in Morgantown, North Carolina.
BC senior Madison Altman led Brevard in the women’s competition with a fourth-place result in a field of 18 climbers. Junior Shyvonne Potter placed seventh to give BC another top-ten result, while freshman Shannon McCarthy finished 16th.
In total through the past two qualifier competitions, Brevard College has accumulated two event wins and 11 top-tens.
Next up for the Tornados is the USA Climbing Collegiate Divisional Championships in High Point, North Carolina, scheduled for March 26-27. The USA Climbing Collegiate National Championships are set for April 22-24 in Bridgeport, Pennsylvania. For more information, go to usaclimbing.org
