The Brevard College men’s tennis team (3-7) defeated Cairn University (3-3) with a decisive 7-2 victory on Sunday morning at the Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
The Tornados raced to a 3-0 lead after doubles play to make an early Sunday morning statement. Junior JaMarcus Walker and freshman Brian Seon blanked their opponent for a quick 8-0 victory in no. 3 doubles. Junior James Srisich and freshman Peter Bresco then gave the Tornados a 2-0 lead with a 8-3 positive result in number two doubles.
The number one team of veteran Tornados Ethan McGee and Andrew Ingram won the tightest of the three doubles matches with a 8-4 victory to complete the sweep in doubles play
Ahead 3-0, Brevard needed two wins in singles play to complete the victory. Walker put the Tornados up four matches to nil with a brilliant 6-0, 6-0 blanking of his opponent in no. 5 singles. McGee then clinched the team win with a 6-3, 6-0 victory in no. 1 singles.
Three of the singles matches went to tiebreakers with the Tornados earning wins in two of the three marathons. Senior Alex Glaze dropped the first set 0-6 in no. 6 singles, the bounced back with an impressive 6-3 win in the second set followed by a 10-5 tiebreaker victory.
Srisch won his first set 6-4 in no. 2 singles before dropping the second set 6-7 to set up a tiebreaker. In a long battle, Srisch then outlasted his opponent 14-12 in the tiebreaker to take the win and cement the 7-2 team victory for the Tornados.
Seon’s number four singles match also went to a third stanza after 1-6, 6-4 results in the two sets before dropping the tiebreaker 10-3.
After a day off. Brevard will play again on Tuesday with two matches on Hilton Head Island. BC will face Morningside University at 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday morning followed by a 5:30 p.m. match vs. Baldwin Wallace University
