Brevard Shuts Down Southern Virginia for Crucial Conference Win

The Brevard College women’s basketball team (18-4, 13-2 USA South) knocked off first-place Southern Virginia (17-6, 15-1 USAS) for just the second time in 10 all-time meetings, as the Tornados pulled out a 73-63 victory on the road at Knight Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The victory matches the Tornados’ single-season NCAA-era regular season win record of 18 set last season. Brevard also matches its conference win record of 13, also set in 2024-25.

The 10-point win over the Knights gives the Tornados their 17th double-digit triumph of 2025-26, as all but one of BC’s wins this season have come by 10 or more points.

Senior forward Olivia Miller dropped 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the way for the Tornados in the pivotal conference victory. Miller went 9-of-15 from the field, hit a 3-pointer, and added three assists as well.

Sophomore forward Kayden Johnson stuffed the stat columns with 14 points, five rebounds, five assists, and three blocked shots. Coming off the bench, Aleysha Hill was critical, scoring a career-high 14 points on a perfect 6-of-6 mark from the field, helping lead Brevard’s defensive effort with five steals. Hill was joined by Jada Petty-Wilkins, who matched her team-leading five-steal effort.

Brevard nailed 48% of its field goal attempts and held SVU to just 31% from the field. The Tornado defense forced the Knights into 19 turnovers on 15 steals, proving a key differentiator in the contest that saw eight ties and six lead changes. BC held a 36-24 edge on points in the paint, and scored 19 points in transition.

Both sides went back and forth in the first quarter, with Brevard and SVU trading blows before a 15-15 deadlock after one period. BC was able to outscore SVU 19-16 in the second period, good enough for a three-point lead, 34-31 at the intermission.

BC used a strong showing in the third quarter to extend its lead all the way out to eight points, 54-46, after three quarters of action. SVU punched back in the fourth period, however, tying the score at 61-61 with 4:28 left to play. An Aysia Foster bucket with 2:59 to go put SVU up by two, but the Tornados would not be denied, scoring the final 12 points of the contest to clinch the massive conference victory by 10 points.

Brevard begins the final week of regular season competition with a 5:30 p.m. matchup against Greensboro College in Greensboro, N.C., next Tuesday, Feb. 17.
