Brevard College and the Brevard Distance Runners Camp recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Runners Camp hosted on the Brevard College campus. The 3 week camp welcomed 1,200 campers and 150 coaches, with a new group of students starting each week. The student runners bring an exciting energy to campus and can be seen encouraging staff members walking or running on their lunch breaks.
The camp is for all levels, ages 13 and over. Middle school students are welcome if a coach attends with the student. Activities include instruction on biomechanics, nutrition, goal setting, training and racing techniques, motivation, and supplemental training – with break out sessions on form running and drills.
Norm Witek, current director of the Brevard distance runners camp, spent 19 years as Cross Country & Track coach and served as past Dean of Students at Brevard College. Norm said “When I was coaching, most of my students were from this camp.” And the tradition continued this year with new safety measures in place – including proof of vaccination for campers 12 and older or a negative test prior to arrival.
The camp was closed last summer due to Covid-19 and advised its followers through Facebook, “We know many of you (like ourselves) need and want camp more than ever right now… As long-distance runners, we are no stranger to challenges. While this is a difficult time for all, we encourage you to continue running within the limitations of your area and recommendations of the CDC. Use this time to focus on your long-term goals, recovery, mental health, and cross training with the guidance of your coaches.”
Brevard College looks forward to hosting Brevard Distance Runners Camp again in summer 2022!
