English professor launches online magazine, “Upscale Appalachia”

Brevard College students walking past bell tower

Upscale Appalachia is a new, online magazine focusing on local, mountain culture. Transylvania
is a thriving mountain community and the perfect backdrop for exploring both traditional and
contemporary culture. Scholar Walt Wolfram states, “It is the perfect project in the perfect
setting.”

Dr. Kristina Holland, Associate Professor of English at Brevard College and a native of
Transylvania County, is designing the magazine while on sabbatical this spring. By publishing
art, creative writing, recipes, oral history, videos and more, the staff, which includes Brevard
College students working on both content and web design, hopes to capture the essence of
our mountain culture.

The magazine will be published twice annually with spring and fall editions. The first edition will
be published on April 15, and submissions are being accepted now through April 1. Please send
submissions and publication ideas to upscale.appalachia@gmail.com.
