The Brevard College Tornado Athletics family mourns the devastating loss of Dr. Stephen E. Knott, Ph.D. (1954 – 2022), Brevard College Faculty Athletics Representative, Associate Professor of Health and Physical Education, Coordinator of the Physical Education and Health Curriculum, and Coordinator of the Health and Human Performance graduate program, who passed away on Thursday, August 4.
Dr. Knott will be dearly missed as a friend, mentor and colleague to students, staff and fellow faculty members at Brevard College. At this difficult time, our attention is turned to Dr. Knott’s family and all who were affected by his legacy. Details of a Celebration of Life for Dr. Knott will be released at a later time.
Dr. Knott recently received tenure and was promoted to Associate Professor of Health and Physical Education at Brevard College in the 2021-22 academic year. He was instrumental in the establishment of the BC’s Health and Human Performance graduate program which was inaugurated in 2021. Since January of 2018, Dr. Knott served as the Brevard College Faculty Athletics Representative, advocating for student athletes and working as a liaison between athletics and academics.
A native of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Dr. Knott received his Master’s degree in Urban Education from Norfolk State University and earned his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Old Dominion University.
In addition to his work in the college setting, Dr. Knott worked with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee, evaluating coaching programs and governing bodies of sport. He evaluated the coaching standards in USA boxing, swimming, weightlifting, judo, and track and presented on the survey and analysis process at the national convention for the U.S. Center for Coaching Excellence. Dr. Knott also competed in Olympic-style weightlifting, winning a Division Championship at the Masters Olympic Weightlifting World Cup in 2019.
