The Solomon S. Turner Annual Scholarship in Biology will begin helping students with demonstrated financial need in the fall of 2021. The family is committed to “pay it forward” and lessen the financial load so that others can have the same transformational experience that Solomon enjoyed.
Through the process of creating the scholarship, Turner reflected on his time at Brevard College and how important it is for his family to invest in another person’s success.
“I believe that achieving your dreams on your own is admirable, though whenever possible extend your hand to your fellows and help them climb the ladder you yourself climbed. I couldn’t have climbed to where I am and achieved my academic goals if I hadn’t received any scholarships. As such, I believe that it is my responsibility to help other like-minded students reach their goals in their journey towards success.”
Solomon Turner grew up in Snow Camp, NC, and came to the mountains of Western North Carolina to obtain degrees in Biology and Sustainable Agriculture. His time at Brevard College fostered a passion for the mountains and the greater Brevard community. While at the college, Solomon was able to serve others through student government, peer-leading first-year students, Biology Club, and Agriculture Club.
“It is so important to help families and alumni who are committed to future students and their ability to benefit from an experiential education,” said Director of Development, Jeff Joyce. “These investments in students make it possible for others, like Solomon, to gain the education and confidence necessary to graduate and lead in their communities.”
