Caelyn Murphy is a Junior Agriculture Education major at Brevard College. She can be seen around campus as a Barista at Bill’s Boiler House and on the court during volleyball season. Murphy plans to teach Agriculture Education at a high school level after graduation.
When asked about her decision to attend Brevard College, Murphy points out the lack of Agriculture Education in North Carolina. “Brevard was actually only one of four schools in North Carolina that offered Agricultural Education at the time that I was looking for schools,” Murphy said, “I was drawn to Brevard because I always knew I wanted to be in the mountains, I was really drawn to the small class size, and I had an offer for volleyball and knew I wanted to continue playing.”
Murphy summarizes the benefits of her time in the program, saying, “I have gained so many new perspectives and a greater appreciation for the hands that grow the food we eat. My love for learning and teaching through working with students in a classroom setting has developed,” Murphy continues, “I have been able to be in a classroom with students as early as my first year and it just solidified what I already knew what I wanted to do. Brevard has given me so many affirming experiences and chances to use what I have learned and apply it.”
In addition to her studies, Murphy has gotten involved in multiple avenues of Brevard College and the surrounding community. “I had the chance to take over the gardening program at Rise & Shine after school program here in Brevard. I am in the Institute for Women in Leadership and serve as the Secretary for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.”
Murphy was also awarded the USA South All sportsmanship award for volleyball for the 2022 season and the French Broad River Garden Club scholarship this year with was paired with a presentation on her experiential education.
