The Brevard College women’s lacrosse team (5-9, 3-5 USAS) recorded a decisive 20-2 win over host Greensboro College (0-9, 0-7 USAS) in USA South Conference competition on Sunday afternoon in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Junior Autumn Kraemer led the Tornados offensively with a season-high six goals and two assists. Senior KC Collins, junior Parker Moore and freshman Emily Denaga each produced four goals scored, while junior Savannah Colliver added two scores for the 20-goal total.
Moore led all players with three assists, while Collins and Colliver each added two assists to the cause. Senior Morgan Graham provided an assist as well.
Freshman Lexi Maclauchlin earned the win in goal for the Tornados, after saving six of the Pride’s eight shots-on-goal.
Brevard struck early with an unassisted goal by Kraemer, just 39 seconds into the contest. Greensboro however answered less than one minute later to tie the game 1-1.
BC went on to score 14 unanswered goals in the match, including seven straight to end the first quarter.
Kramer scored again, off an assist by Collins, to begin the scoring parade. Moore, Colliver and Collins then all scored two goals apiece during a seven-minute span to give the Tornados an 8-1 advantage at the end of the first period.
After a nearly a ten-minute scoreless span from the end of the first through the start of the second period, Denaga scored her first goal of the day on a free position shot to give BC a 9-1 lead. Graham set up Kraemer for a goal with 7:39 to play in the second, followed by a goal just 18 seconds later by Denaga to make the score 11-1. Collins and Moore rounded out the scoring in the second period as the Tornados took a 13-1 lead into halftime.
Moore and Kraemer connected on back-to-back goals to start the second half as BC stretched its lead to 15-1. The 14-0 scoring run by the Tornados was snapped three minutes later with Greensboro’s second and final goal of the game with 5:20 to play in the third quarter.
Denaga delivered with an unassisted goal to reestablish the scoring momentum with 1:50 left in the third. Kraemer then scored, off an assist by Collins, on a buzzer-beater with time expiring in the third.
Ahead 17-2, BC cruised to the victory with a 3-0 shutout in the fourth quarter behind goals on free-position shots by Collins and Moore as well as a goal by Denaga to bring Brevard to the 20-goal mark.
The scoring total marked the third time this season that the Tornados have scored 20 or more goals in a game.
BC won 11 draw controls, while finding success on 19-of-26 clear attempts. BC won the ground-ball battle with a 26-21 advantage as freshman Dani Stavely, Maclauchlin and Collins each recorded four ground balls. Junior Josh Mitchell registered three ground balls on the defensive end.
The win concluded a weekend sweep of USA South Conference opponents on the road for the Tornados. Twenty-four hours earlier in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, BC defeated NC Wesleyan 11-10 in overtime. The two wins signified the first back-to-back wins of the season for the Tornados.
Next up for Brevard is a road trip at Southern Virginia on Saturday, April 16 at 3 p.m. in Buena Vista, Virginia.
