The Brevard College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, under the direction of Dr. David Gresham, invite you to the 24th annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols on Saturday, December 4th in The Porter Center for Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.
In keeping with the tradition established by King’s College in Cambridge, England, the lessons include the fall of humanity as told in Genesis, the prophecy of the Messiah from the book of Isaiah, and stories of the annunciation and nativity selected from the gospels of Luke, Matthew and John. Each lesson is followed by a carol that illuminates the text. The lessons are read by Brevard College faculty and staff, and the carols are performed by the Brevard College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers
“This is one of the most meaningful events in the life of the college, and I’m excited to share this program again in person this year.” Gresham says.
The program at Brevard College includes the original readings, along with supplemental carols selected by the director, Dr. David Gresham.
As is tradition, the ceremony opens with “Once in Royal David’s City,” sung first by a soloist, with the choir and congregants joining in later verses. The conclusion of the program is a beautiful arrangement of “Stille Nacht” (Silent Night) sung by candlelight.
Admission is free. Seating will be limited to 500 patrons, and all audience members must wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status.
